The best scenic drive in western Crete
The grand western loop from Chania: the plane-tree gorge of Theriso, the Samaria viewpoint at Omalos, the pink sand of Elafonisi, Chrysoskalitissa monastery and sunset at Falassarna, with the boat to Balos as an encore.
The best scenic drive in eastern Crete
From Heraklion to the palace of Knossos, over the windmill pass onto the Lasithi plateau, to the birth cave of Zeus, the frescoes of Kritsa, the lake of Agios Nikolaos and the fortress island of Spinalonga.

The compact loop from Rethymno, north coast to south coast and back: the springs of Argyroupoli, straight through the Kotsifou and Kourtaliotiko gorges, the bay of Plakias, Preveli monastery above the palm beach and the lion fountain of Spili.

This route turns the drive into half the experience: first the Venetian harbour of Chania, then the spectacular Topolia gorge and the white monastery of Chrysoskalitissa on its rock, with the turquoise lagoon of Elafonisi as the finale.

Why Crete is such good driving country
Crete is a mountain range in the sea: three chains above two thousand metres, with gorges, high plateaus and coast roads between them that are never straight for long. The island truly opens up by (rental) car, because its finest places are scattered and buses barely reach them. There are no tolls on the island and no true motorway either (as of 2026); you drive quiet mountain and coast roads nearly all the way. Expect goats on the tarmac, tavernas in the loveliest spots and a landscape that flips completely from region to region: exactly why three separate loops are more honest than one rushed lap of the island.
Frequently asked questions
Which Crete loop suits me?
Staying around Chania, or keen on gorges and the most famous beaches? Choose West Crete. Based around Heraklion, Hersonissos or Agios Nikolaos? East Crete pairs history (Knossos, Spinalonga) with the Lasithi plateau. Around Rethymno or Plakias, Central Crete with its two gorge roads is the most compact and surprising day. The three loops do not overlap: together they cover the island.
Are the routes suitable for an ordinary rental car?
Yes, all three loops are fully paved. Mountain and gorge roads are narrow and winding though: drive gently, sound your horn on blind bends and expect goats. We deliberately avoid unpaved tracks such as the Balos piste; for that we take the boat.
Do you pay tolls on Crete?
No, nowhere (as of 2026). Crete has no true motorway yet either; a new motorway is under construction along the north coast, but it is not open. Our routes run almost entirely on provincial mountain and coast roads.
When is the best time for a Crete road trip?
April to June and September to October: warm, clear and far quieter than high season. In July and August, plan beaches like Elafonisi for early or late in the day; the Samaria gorge and many mountain trails belong to the May-to-October season.
