An arrival day full of Crete instead of just a transfer
The fastest way from Heraklion Airport to Elounda is the national road (VOAK/E75) along the north coast: just over an hour. This route makes more of it. You start right next to the airport with the palace of Knossos, Greece's most famous excavation. Then you follow the coast east and climb briefly inland at Agios Nikolaos to the mountain village of Kritsa and the Byzantine church of Panagia Kera. Past the lake of Agios Nikolaos, the last kilometres to Elounda run along the corniche with Spinalonga in view.

Knossos sits practically next to the airport: this is the moment to see the palace before the holiday rhythm of your resort takes over. Any ordinary rental car handles the route fine.
From Heraklion Airport to Elounda
Pick up your car and drive ten minutes south to Knossos: the Minoan palace of the red columns and the millennia-old frescoes, the labyrinth of the Minotaur myth. Arrive early and you beat the coaches. Then take the national road east and turn off at Agios Nikolaos for Kritsa, the mountain village above a sea of olive trees, with the Byzantine church of Panagia Kera just outside it. Back in Agios Nikolaos, walk a lap of the strangely deep Lake Voulismeni, and drive the final kilometres to Elounda along the corniche with the island of Spinalonga in view.
Honest advice for arrival day: Knossos takes 1.5 to 2 hours; landing in the afternoon, save the palace for the return leg and keep Kritsa and the lake. In high season Knossos is quietest right at opening.
From Elounda to Heraklion Airport
On the day of your flight, time matters. Drive the route in mirror image and plan Knossos as the last stop: it is ten minutes from the airport, so you can stay until about three hours before your flight. Leave Elounda along the corniche, take a morning coffee by the lake at Agios Nikolaos, and run the national road to Heraklion.
Mind your rental return time and refuel before handing the car in; there are petrol stations around the airport and along the national road.
The fastest route or the most beautiful route
The direct road (VOAK/E75) takes you from the airport to Elounda in just over an hour. Fine after a late landing, but you miss Knossos at the moment it is closest. This route takes its time for the three finest stops of north-east Crete. You can always shorten it: every stop can be skipped separately, the national road runs parallel.
The 3 stops along the drive
1. Knossos
Knossos is Crete's largest and most famous Minoan palace, over three thousand years old: the labyrinth of the Minotaur myth. The red columns and fresco reproductions (Arthur Evans's restorations remain debated) make the Bronze Age more tangible here than anywhere else in Greece.
Practical: paid parking at the entrance, ten minutes from the airport. Buy your ticket online and come before half past nine or after four; in high season the coaches are many. Allow 1.5 to 2 hours.
2. Kritsa (Panagia Kera)
Kritsa hangs on the flank above a sea of olive trees, a real working village of looms and narrow lanes. Just outside it stands the Panagia Kera, the Byzantine church whose thirteenth and fourteenth century frescoes are considered the finest on Crete.
Practical: park at the village entrance. The Panagia Kera lies on the road up (small admission); together an hour's stop. The Kritsa gorge is a walk for another day.
3. Agios Nikolaos
Agios Nikolaos is built around Lake Voulismeni, an almost circular, deep lake joined to the harbour by a small channel. Legend has Athena bathing in it. Terraces all around, boats in the harbour and the best evening stroll of eastern Crete.
Practical: park by the harbour (paid) and walk the lap of the lake. The corniche to Elounda afterwards is the finest finale: stop at one of the viewpoints over Spinalonga.
Practical: rental car, season and vehicle
Picking up at Heraklion: the rental desks are by the arrivals hall (HER). Book online in advance; in high season the queue is long. Return at Heraklion and there is no one-way fee.
Knossos: buy your ticket online beforehand and come early or late in the day. There is little shade; bring water and a hat.
Best time: April to June and September, October are ideal. July and August are hot and busy; drive early and plan Knossos at opening.
Vehicle: any rental car handles this fine. The climb to Kritsa is winding but wide enough; by camper, park at the edge in Agios Nikolaos.
Fuel: fill up before returning the car; there are stations around the airport and along the national road.

What we deliberately leave out
We leave out Heraklion city and its archaeological museum: together with Knossos that is too much for an arrival day, and the museum deserves a morning of its own. The Lasithi plateau and the Cave of Zeus belong to the full eastern Crete loop; this corridor is deliberately the arrival drive.
