Berat is one of the finest towns in Albania: a UNESCO city where the white Ottoman houses with their many windows climb the hillside, crowned by a still-inhabited castle. The nickname city of a thousand windows is obvious the moment you arrive. The road there turns it into a culture drive: first the largest Roman amphitheatre in the Balkans at Durres on the coast, then the ancient city of Apollonia and the quiet monastery of Ardenica.
Unlike the mountain drive to Theth, this is an easy day on flat, good roads: ideal for your first day with the rental car. We write out both directions separately; you open the whole route with every stop in Google Maps or download the GPX.

From Tirana Airport to Berat
Pick up your car at Tirana Airport and drive to the coast at Durres, where the largest Roman amphitheatre in the Balkans sits in the middle of the city, once seating twenty thousand. Follow the plain south to Apollonia near Fier, an ancient Greek and Roman city with the famous Monument of the Agonothetes and a monastery on the hill. A quarter of an hour on lies the quiet monastery of Ardenica, where the national hero Skanderbeg married. Then east, into the Osum valley, to Berat, where you park at the bottom and explore the Mangalem and Gorica quarters and the castle on foot.
This works well on your arrival day: the roads are flat and good. To do the stops at leisure, start early and book an overnight in Berat.
From Berat to Tirana Airport
Back to the airport you can take the same coastal road, or a shorter direct route via Lushnje and the motorway. On the day of your flight choose the direct route: allow about two hours without stops. To take in Apollonia or Ardenica on the way, plan plenty of time, as that is a detour via the coast.
Mind the rental car return time and fill up near Tirana, as most providers want the car returned full.
The fastest route or the most beautiful route
The fastest way from Tirana Airport to Berat runs directly via Lushnje, in about two hours, without the coast. Our route is deliberately longer: the detour past Durres, Apollonia and Ardenica turns it into a culture day. With only half a day, skip the coast and drive straight to Berat.
The 3 stops along the route
1. Durres
Durres is the old port city on the Adriatic coast, and in the middle of the centre lies the largest Roman amphitheatre in the Balkans, built under emperor Trajan and once seating some twenty thousand. You walk straight across the old tiers; there is also a seafront promenade to stretch your legs.
Practical: park in the centre and walk to the amphitheatre. An hour is enough; combine it with a coffee on the promenade if you like.
2. Apollonia
Apollonia was an important Greek and later Roman city, founded around 600 BC, and now lies as an archaeological park in the rolling hills near Fier. The famous Monument of the Agonothetes with its columns is the emblem; on the hill stands a medieval monastery with a small museum.
Practical: there is parking at the park entrance. Allow an hour and a half to walk around; wear sturdy shoes for the paths.
3. Ardenica
The monastery of Ardenica from 1282 stands quietly on a hill above the plain and is known as the place where the Albanian national hero Skanderbeg married in 1451. The church has fine frescoes and woodcarving; it is a calm, understated stop between the bustle of the ruins and the town.
Practical: park at the monastery; entry is usually free. Half an hour is enough; dress appropriately for the church.
Practical: parking in Berat, season and time
Parking in Berat: the old Mangalem and Gorica quarters are narrow and partly car-free; park at the bottom by the river or in the designated spots and explore on foot. You can drive up to the castle, but the road there is steep and narrow; on foot is often nicer.
Season: you can drive this route all year; spring and autumn are the most pleasant. In summer the plain and Berat get very hot, so start early and bring water.
Time: with the three stops this is a full day. To see everything at leisure, stay overnight in Berat and drive back or on the next day.
Vehicle: one of the easiest routes for any rental car and fine with a camper too; only the lane up to Berat castle is tight.

Gjirokaster, the other Ottoman UNESCO town, is beautiful but lies much further south; it is better combined with a separate trip through the south. The Osum canyon near Berat is a fine detour for those staying longer, but needs its own half day. And Tirana itself we leave out: that is a city visit in its own right.
