Landing at Tirana (TIA) and heading into the Albanian Alps? This drive to Theth passes the bazaar town of Kruje, the imposing Rozafa castle above Shkoder, and then climbs into the mountains on the paved but winding SH21 to the spectacular Theth valley. Not a short transfer, but one of the finest mountain drives in the Balkans.

Into the Albanian Alps
Theth lies deep in the Albanian Alps (the Prokletije, also called the Accursed Mountains) and is one of the country's best-known nature and hiking destinations. The road there is no quick transfer but an experience: first the historic bazaar town of Kruje above Tirana, then the Rozafa castle high above Shkoder and Lake Shkodra, and then the climb into the mountains on the SH21 to the green Theth valley.
It is a fly-drive route par excellence: you land at Tirana, pick up your rental car and drive into the mountains. We write out both directions separately. It is not a route for those who want to be on a beach quickly, nor for a late arrival day: you want to drive the mountain road in daylight. Take your time, plan an overnight stay in or near Theth, and read the practical tips on season, fuel and insurance carefully.
From Tirana Airport to Theth
Pick up your car at Tirana Airport and head north. First stop is Kruje, the town on the mountainside with its old bazaar and the castle of national hero Skanderbeg. On to Shkoder, with the imposing Rozafa castle on a rock above the confluence of the rivers and Lake Shkodra. Fill up at Koplik, because after that the mountain road begins. The SH21 climbs through the mountains, over the Qafa e Thores pass, and descends with hairpins into the green Theth valley, with its little church, waterfalls and surrounding peaks.
An honest tip: drive this in daylight and start early. After a late landing you are better off staying overnight in Shkoder and driving into the mountains the next morning. In high season the narrow road is busy; drive calmly and use the pull-outs.
From Theth to Tirana Airport
The other way, on the day of your flight, time matters. Leave Theth in good time, because the mountain road back to Shkoder is slow. Drive the SH21 down calmly, fill up again at Koplik if needed, and take the fast road back to Tirana Airport from Shkoder. Allow at least three hours plus your stops, and keep a margin for the mountains.
Mind the rental car return time and your provider's fuel rule (usually return it full). So fill up near Tirana before you bring the car back.
The fastest route or the most beautiful route
There is no truly fast road to Theth: it is a mountain drive of at least three hours on the SH21 either way. To cut down on culture, skip Kruje and drive straight to Shkoder and into the mountains. The road itself cannot be shortened; take your time and drive in daylight.
The 3 stops along the route
1. Kruje
Kruje sits on a steep mountainside above the plain of Tirana and is tied to the Albanian national hero Skanderbeg, whose castle towers above the town. The old bazaar with its wooden shops sells carpets, copper and antiques. A good first stop to stretch your legs and take in the view over the plain.
Practical: park at the entrance of the old bazaar and walk up to the castle. An hour to an hour and a half is enough for a first impression.
2. Shkoder
Shkoder is the gateway to the north, and the Rozafa castle rises a hundred and thirty metres above the city, on a rock between the rivers Buna and Drin and overlooking Lake Shkodra. The walls are largely Venetian; the legend of Rozafa, who let herself be walled in so the castle would stand, belongs to the place. From the ramparts you have a wide view over water and mountains.
Practical: park at the foot of the castle and walk up. Combine with a short stop in the centre of Shkoder; fill up afterwards at Koplik.
3. Theth valley
After the Qafa e Thores pass the road descends into the Theth valley, where the river Thethit flows through a green valley among the peaks. The image of the wooden church in the meadow, ringed by mountains, is the symbol of the Albanian Alps. From the village the well-known walks lead to the Grunas waterfall and the Blue Eye.
Practical: the through road is paved, but the side lanes in the village are unpaved; park at your accommodation or at the edge. Bring cash, as card payment can be tricky.

Season: drive this route from late May to early October. In winter and early spring the mountain road to Theth can be impassable or closed by snow and ice; check road conditions shortly before you leave.
Fuel: fill up at Koplik, the last fuel stop before you enter the mountains. Facilities in Theth itself are limited; bring cash too.
Rental car and insurance: the SH21 is paved, so an ordinary rental car can drive the route; some ground clearance is nice. Note: the unpaved side lanes in Theth and some side roads may fall outside your rental car insurance cover. Park on the paved road and check the terms.
Driving in the dark: drive the mountain road only in daylight. Start early, and after a late landing rather stay overnight in Shkoder. The road is narrow and winding, with steep drops and sometimes livestock on the road.
Vehicle: lovely on a motorbike for the experienced rider; with a camper the SH21 is too narrow and winding, so choose another destination.

What we deliberately leave out
Lake Koman with its ferry is a beautiful detour in the north, but needs a separate day and planning; we keep to the direct line to Theth. Valbona on the other side of the mountains is linked to Theth by a hiking pass, but by car a long separate route. And Tirana itself we leave out: that is a city visit in its own right.
