Measured with Google Maps, motorways avoided: the harbour towns route covers about 124 kilometres in some 2 hours and 30 minutes of pure driving. The loop avoids the motorway and follows the coast and dike roads along the Wadden Sea and the IJsselmeer, with a loop through the woods and cliffs of Gaasterland. Distance and driving time measured via Google Maps with motorways avoided (July 2026). How we work.

From the Wadden Sea to the IJsselmeer, along the harbours

The Frisian harbour towns string themselves along the IJsselmeer coast: this route of about 124 kilometres follows the coast from the Wadden Sea at Harlingen to the IJsselmeer corner, past old harbour towns, dikes and the only cliffs Friesland has. No motorway, just the coast road with the water almost always in view and the sea wind thrown in.

The charm is in the variety: the sea port of Harlingen on the Wadden Sea, the colourful little harbours of Hindeloopen and Stavoren on the IJsselmeer, and then the surprise of Gaasterland, where flat Friesland suddenly gains woods and cliffs. In about 2.5 hours of driving, with terraces and a cliff walk, it is a full day by the coast.

The places along the route

1. Harlingen

Start · the only sea port

Harlingen (Harns) is the only Frisian town on the open sea, on the Wadden Sea. The ferries to Terschelling and Vlieland leave from the piers, and the canals are lined with old warehouses and captains houses. Here the coast begins.

Practical: park by the harbour; fish restaurants and terraces by the water.

2. Bolsward

just inland · renaissance town hall

Bolsward (Boalsert) lies just inland and is worth the short detour for its town hall of 1615, one of the finest renaissance buildings in the Netherlands. A brief historic pause between the coastal towns.

Practical: park around the centre; the town hall is on the through route.

3. Workum

on the IJsselmeer · harbour and pottery

Workum (Warkum) reaches down to its harbour It Soal on the IJsselmeer, with the great St Gertrude church and traditional Frisian pottery. In the old weigh house hangs the work of Jopie Huisman.

Practical: park along the ribbon; the marina lies just outside the village.

The old harbour of Hindeloopen with a wooden bridge and sailing boats on the IJsselmeer.

4. Hindeloopen

on the coast · its own language and colour

Hindeloopen (Hylpen) is the most singular coastal town, with its own dialect and the colourful Hindeloopen painting style. The little harbour with its wooden bridge and small lighthouse looks straight out over the IJsselmeer.

Practical: park on the edge; centre and harbour are low-traffic.

5. Stavoren

the southwest corner · oldest town

Stavoren (Starum) is the oldest Frisian town and once a mighty Hanseatic port. On the pier the Lady of Stavoren gazes out over the water; here the route turns from the Wadden side to the IJsselmeer corner.

Practical: harbour terraces; a fine place for a break with a wide view.

6. Oudemirdum

Gaasterland · the cliffs and woods

At Oudemirdum begins Gaasterland, the one part of Friesland with slopes, woods and real cliffs above the water. Nearby lies the Rode Klif, where the land drops steeply into the IJsselmeer, a unique view on this flat coast.

Practical: park at the Mar en Klif visitor centre; footpaths to the cliffs.

7. Balk

on the Luts · gateway to Gaasterland

Balk lies on the little river Luts, with stately houses on either side of the water. It is the pleasant gateway to Gaasterland, a short run inland before the route returns to the coast.

Practical: park in the centre; terrace on the Luts.

8. Makkum

back on the coast · harbour and pottery

Makkum closes the loop, back on the IJsselmeer. It is the home of the famous Makkum pottery of Royal Tichelaar, one of the oldest companies in the Netherlands, and of a lively harbour full of sailing boats.

Practical: park by the harbour; the pottery and terraces are within walking distance.

Practical: for convertible, motorbike and camper

From which town: the route starts in Harlingen, but you join wherever you like. Enter your address or holiday home in the planner, choose your time, and Touren.app rebuilds the same coastal loop from Bolsward, Lemmer or Makkum.

For which vehicle: the coast roads are quiet and open, so this is a fine scenic drive with sea wind and views. With a camper, mind the narrow centre of Hindeloopen and park on the edge.

Gaasterland, the surprise: nowhere else is Friesland hilly. At Oudemirdum you drive through real woods to the cliffs above the IJsselmeer, with the Rode Klif as the highlight. Put on walking shoes for the finest view of the drive.

Difference from the other Frisian routes: this route goes around the coast and the harbours. If you have come for the eleven cities, the Elfstedentocht by car is your route; for the water and watersports, the Frisian Lakes route is the finest choice.

Best season: spring and autumn are finest on the coast, with clear light and a good breeze; in summer Hindeloopen and Stavoren are busy. With a west wind the IJsselmeer breaks handsomely against the dikes.
