Why Friesland tours so well
Little motorway, plenty of back road. Friesland has a fine-meshed network of quiet roads between the lakes, over the terp mounds and along the IJsselmeer dyke, exactly the kind of tarmac a scenic drive asks for. The eleven cities sit like beads on a string within driving distance of each other, the lake district around Sneek is an afternoon, and the coast from Makkum to Gaasterland gives you water on one side and villages on the other. Convertible, motorbike or camper: the flat, open Frisian roads drive well for all three.

Which places are a walking stop and which a photo stop?
That is shown per place in the selection above. A walking stop, like one of the eleven-cities towns, you take on foot; a photo stop, like the Waterpoort of Sneek, you often admire from the public quay. Many Frisian stops also look great from the road.
Are these Frisian routes free?

Why is not every Frisian town in the selection?
Deliberately not. We only add places that clear our bar: how they look from the road or water, a safe place to stop, and a setting on beautiful back roads. The selection grows with each curation wave; what does not clear the bar, we leave out.
