Castle Route South Limburg
72 kilometres of back roads through the only hill country of the Netherlands, past seven castles: from the country's only hilltop castle to its only terraced château. Minutes from Maastricht, made for convertibles, motorbikes and anyone who drives for the joy of it.
The best castle day trip in the Netherlands starts where the hills begin
South Limburg is the one corner of the Netherlands with real hills, and it packs the country's highest castle density. This loop strings the seven finest together over exactly the roads a convertible or motorbike was made for: sunken lanes between the hedgerows, avenues through old orchards and short climbs with views across three countries. No motorway, no through-traffic where it can be helped.
Staying in Maastricht or Valkenburg, or at one of the holiday parks in the hills? You start practically from your doorstep, or rebuild the same loop from your own address in one click. Along the way: Oud-Valkenburg with two castles within sight of each other, the monastery village of Wittem, the quiet Jeker valley on the Belgian border and, as the finale, Hoensbroek Castle.
How much time do you have?
The castles along the route
1. Valkenburg Castle Ruins
The only hilltop castle in the Netherlands and the country's largest castle ruin, connected to the caves below by centuries-old escape tunnels. Park in Valkenburg and walk up in ten minutes; the view over the Geul valley sets the tone for the whole ride.
Practical: ruins and caves can be combined; terraces at the foot of the castle hill.
2. Schaloen Castle (Oud-Valkenburg)
Two kilometres on lies Oud-Valkenburg, where Schaloen Castle and Genhoes Castle stand a stone's throw apart: nowhere else in the Netherlands takes you from castle to castle this quickly. Schaloen mirrors itself in a moat fed by the river Geul, and the lane past it is one of the prettiest stretches of the loop.
Practical: photo stop along the lane; the orchards blossom in April.
3. Wittem Castle
Over the Gulperberg you drop into the Selzerbeek valley towards Wittem. The castle, once a moated stronghold with a history reaching back to the fourteenth century, is now an intimate castle hotel: the natural coffee stop a third of the way in, with Wittem monastery next door.
Practical: coffee stop, parking across the road.
4. Château Neercanne (Maastricht)
Through the quiet Jeker valley, with Belgium within touching distance, you reach the only terraced castle in the Netherlands: a seventeenth-century baroque château built against the Cannerberg, its terraced gardens echoing the Loire. Around the halfway mark and perfectly placed for lunch, from Michelin-level dining to a glass on the terrace.
Practical: book ahead for lunch; the approach through the Jeker valley is a highlight in itself.
5. Hoensbroek Castle
The finale. From its round tower of 1360, Hoensbroek grew into the largest castle between the Meuse and the Rhine: 67 halls and rooms, and the only castle in the Netherlands with two outer baileys. With time to spare you can lose an hour in seven centuries here; driving on, the bridge over the moat gives you the best picture of the day.
Practical: museum castle with a large free car park; the last stretch back to Valkenburg runs through the quiet Geleenbeek valley.
Also along the route, without a planned stop: Genhoes Castle (Oud-Valkenburg, privately inhabited, visible from the road) and Oost Castle (on the edge of Valkenburg). Add them as photo stops in the planner if you like.
Practical: parking, entry and the best time
Start and parking: start in Valkenburg aan de Geul (park at the edge of the centre, ten minutes on foot to the ruins) or at Hoensbroek Castle with its large free car park. Entry: the ruins and Hoensbroek charge admission; current times and tickets are on the official sites of Valkenburg Castle Ruins and Hoensbroek Castle; Schaloen and Neercanne are admired from outside or from the terrace. For whom: a day out for couples and families alike (Hoensbroek is a proper museum castle for children); any car handles the route, rental cars included, and traffic drives on the right. Crowds: summer Sunday afternoons are busiest around Valkenburg; start early for the quietest roads. Why these roads: we deliberately chose the parallel back roads over the provincial N-roads, with the sunken lanes near Oud-Valkenburg and the Jeker valley as the highlights.
