Mind the season: the fruit blossom usually flowers from early to mid-April (pears first, then apples); outside that the fruit country is green and the dikes and villages are at their finest. Measured with Google Maps, motorways avoided: the loop is about 55 kilometres in around 1 hour and 20 minutes of pure driving through the Neder-Betuwe. The route avoids the motorway and follows the dike and orchard roads. Distance and driving time measured via Google Maps with motorways avoided (July 2026). The flowering period varies each year with the weather; reckon on early to mid-April. How we work.

Through the fruit country of the Betuwe

The Betuwe is the fruit basket of the Netherlands: between the Lower Rhine and the Waal lies orchard after orchard, and in April the whole land turns into a sea of pink and white. This route strings together the fruit villages, from Tiel via the walled town of Buren to Kesteren and Ochten, always past blossoming trees, dikes and old village centres. About 55 kilometres in all, a half day with plenty of time to stop at an orchard or a fruit stall.

Honest about the season: the blossom is brief. The pears usually flower first, in early April, the apples a little later; two to three weeks and it is over. Come outside that window and the fruit country is green but still lovely, with the dikes, the Betuwe villages and, in late summer, the laden trees. So this route is here all year, but for the pink and white you come in mid-April.

The places along the route

A blossoming fruit orchard in the Neder-Betuwe near Kesteren.

1. Tiel

Start · fruit town on the Waal

Tiel is the largest town of the Betuwe and has been the heart of the fruit trade for centuries; every autumn it holds the fruit corso parade. On the Waal with its broad floodplains the route sets off into the fruit country. A good start with car parks and terraces in the old centre.

Practical: car parks in the centre; the Waal quay and the market are within walking distance.

2. Buren

the walled town · Buren

Buren is the jewel of the route: a tiny, perfectly preserved walled town with ramparts, an orphanage founded by William of Orange and a bond with the Royal House (Queen Máxima is Countess of Buren). The church and the windmill rise above the roofs, with orchards right up to the walls.

Practical: park on the edge; the compact centre is at its best on foot.

3. Zoelen

orchards · Zoelen

Zoelen lies in the middle of the fruit country, with the moated Soelen castle among the orchards. Around the village the trees stand in dense rows; in blossom you drive through a tunnel of pink and white here. One of the finest stretches of the route.

Practical: a short stop; park in the village, the castle park is partly open.

4. Maurik

on the Rhine · Maurik

Maurik lies on the Lower Rhine, where the fruit country gives way to dikes and floodplains with lakes. From the dike you look out over the river and the orchard land; a good place to pause by the water before the route heads inland again.

Practical: park by the recreation lake or in the village; terraces by the water.

5. Kesteren

fruit village · Kesteren

Kesteren is a true fruit village in the middle of the Neder-Betuwe, ringed by orchards and avenue trees (the area is also the centre of Dutch tree nurseries). Around the village lie the densest orchards of the route, wonderful in blossom.

Practical: park in the village; fruit stalls and pick-your-own farms nearby.

6. Ochten

the finale · on the Waal dike

Ochten closes the loop, on the Waal dike between the orchards and the river. From the dike you have a wide view over the floodplains and the fruit trees; from here you drive back to Tiel. A calm finale with the water and the fruit side by side.

Practical: park in the village or on the dike; fine view over the Waal.

Practical: for convertible, motorbike and camper

Come for the blossom in April: the flowering usually peaks from early to mid-April and lasts only two to three weeks. The exact date varies each year with the weather; follow the fruit-region reports or come in the second week of April for the best chance of full pink and white.

From which town: the route starts in Tiel, but you can join anywhere. Enter your address in the planner, choose your time, and Touren.app rebuilds the same loop from Buren, Culemborg, Wageningen or wherever you are staying.

For which vehicle: the dike and orchard roads are quiet and open, so a fine scenic drive. With a camper, mind the narrow centre of Buren and park on the edge.

Difference from the Lek and Linge route: this route is about the fruit blossom and the orchards of the Neder-Betuwe. For the forts and dikes of the New Dutch Water Line, the Lek and Linge route through the western river country is your route.
