The finest towns and villages of the Netherlands
An old town or village is the ideal stop on a scenic drive: a stroll along the canal, a terrace, a church tower. From fortified towns and Hanseatic cities to museum villages by the water, these are the 17 centres that passed our own vetting. At each one you plan a drive there in one click, or let the planner build a round trip past the finest towns and villages.
What we deliberately leave out, and why
The Netherlands has hundreds of villages; we include only the centres truly worth a stop. A few examples of what we do not (yet) add:
- Big cities: this is a list of towns and villages, not cities; those have their own approach.
- Places without a low-traffic or historic centre: without a protected townscape, a fortress or an old harbour there is little to stop for.
- Villages with nowhere to park on the edge: if you cannot stop properly, it is not a driving stop.
If a town or village is in our list, it is worth the detour.
Plan a round trip past pretty towns from your own start
Type your start town and we build a round trip of about two hours with towns and villages from our selection as stops. Then adjust everything: duration, number of stops, vehicle.
17 towns and villages approved as a stop. A place name is enough; no need to share your location.

Fortified town, Hanseatic city or museum village
Whether you drive past fortified towns, Hanseatic cities or museum villages, the reward is the same: a centre where time stands still for a moment. The star forts of the east, the harbour towns by the water, the white villages of the south: we line up the finest per province, with the drive as the main course and the stop as the rest.
Frequently asked questions
Can I plan a route past pretty villages from my own address?
Yes. Type your start town above and we build a round trip with towns and villages as stops; or click "plan a route here" at a place and fill in your start.
Can you drive into the centre by car?
Usually not: the finest centres are low-traffic or car-free. You park on the edge and explore the last stretch on foot. That is noted per place in the warnings.
Why aren't all villages included?
Deliberately not. We add only centres with a genuinely special, walkable old town: a protected townscape, a fortress, an old harbour or a museum village. What does not clear the bar, we leave out.
Are these village drives free?
Yes. Viewing, generating from your own start, downloading the GPX and roadbook and sharing are free, with a small Touren.app mark.
