But with a small detour you turn the transfer into your first afternoon on the coast: the salt lake with the mosque of Hala Sultan Tekke, the fishing creek of Potamos Liopetri, turquoise Nissi Beach, the sea caves and cliffs of Cape Greco and the hidden cove of Konnos, all the way to the Fig Tree Bay of Protaras.

The coast and the cape instead of the A3 straight through
The fastest way from Larnaca Airport to Ayia Napa or Protaras is the A3: an hour of motorway, toll-free, straight to your hotel. Fine if you land late. But once you have the rental car anyway, you may as well make the transfer your first afternoon of the holiday. This route picks up the coast road where the motorway meets the sea and threads together the finest places on the south-eastern tip: the salt lake by the airport, an old fishing harbour, turquoise Nissi Beach, the sea caves and cliffs of Cape Greco and the cove of Konnos, all the way to the Fig Tree Bay of Protaras.
It is the classic fly-drive: land at Larnaca, pick up the rental and make the drive to your hotel your first taste of the coast. Who is this route for
For anyone landing at Larnaca and staying in Ayia Napa, Protaras or Pernera, and for anyone who would rather trade the transfer for a first real afternoon on the coast. Most of it is flat, easy motorway; only around Cape Greco does it turn narrower and more winding. In a convertible or on a motorbike the cape is a joy, and just as good in an ordinary rental. Landing late or tired? Take the A3 straight and drive the cape as a short loop the next morning.
From Larnaca Airport to Protaras
Pick up your car at Larnaca Airport. Right beside the runway lies the first stop: the salt lake with the mosque of Hala Sultan Tekke among the palms, full of flamingos in spring. Then take the A3 east and drop off the motorway at the coast to the fishing creek of Potamos Liopetri. Past Ayia Napa and Nissi Beach you drive out onto the cape: the sea caves and cliffs of Cape Greco and the hidden cove of Konnos, finishing at the Fig Tree Bay of Protaras.
Honest advice for arrival day: with a morning flight you manage all five stops easily. Landing in the afternoon, drive on to the cape for the golden evening light and keep the salt lake for the way home.
From Protaras to Larnaca Airport
On the day of your flight home, time matters. Drive the route in mirror image: Cape Greco and Konnos once more in the morning light, then along the coast road past Ayia Napa and the salt lake back to the airport. Short on margin? From the cape you are on the A3 towards Larnaca within the hour, so drop the stops if you must.
Mind your rental return time and refuel before handing the car in; there are petrol stations around the airport and along the A3.
The fastest route or the most beautiful route
The A3 takes you toll-free from Larnaca Airport to Protaras in about an hour. Handy in a hurry or after a late landing, but you mostly see motorway. This route deliberately picks up the coast road and the cape: a little longer, but with the salt lake, Nissi Beach, the sea caves and the cove of Konnos. You can always cut it short: from any point you rejoin the A3 at Ayia Napa.
The 5 stops along the drive
1. Larnaca-zoutmeer
Right beside the airport lies the great salt lake of Larnaca, where on the shore the Ottoman mosque of Hala Sultan Tekke stands among the palms, one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Islam. In winter and spring thousands of flamingos settle here; in summer the lake dries to a white salt flat.
Practical: small car park at the mosque, free entry, shoulders covered. It is only a few minutes from arrivals, a fine way to begin your week on Cyprus.
2. Potamos Liopetri
Potamos tou Liopetriou is a narrow, natural creek where the fishing boats lie moored deep inland, with little white chapels and fish tavernas on either side. It is one of the last authentic fishing harbours of the south-east coast, far from the hotel strips.
Practical: park along the creek and walk the loop. Around lunchtime the tavernas serve the day's catch; early in the morning the light on the water is loveliest.
3. Ayia Napa
Ayia Napa is famous for its turquoise water and white sand beaches, with Nissi Beach and its little islet the best known. In the old village heart, amid the crowds, stands the medieval monastery of Ayia Napa around a quiet courtyard, and colourful boats line the fishing harbour.
Practical: park by the beach or the harbour; in high season come early. If you only want the calm, skip the nightlife heart and drive on to the cape.
4. Cape Greco
Cape Greco is the south-eastern tip of the island: white limestone cliffs above deep blue water, with hollowed-out sea caves you can peer into from the rocks, natural arches and, on the cape, the little white chapel of Agioi Anargyroi. The whole area is a protected nature park.
Practical: park by the sea caves or the chapel and walk the coast paths. Take care on the cliffs, there are no railings. On a clear day you see far out to sea.
5. Konnos Bay
Between Cape Greco and Protaras lies Konnos, a horseshoe bay of turquoise water set between wooded slopes, the finest on the south-east coast. From the coast road you look down on it from above before descending to the beach.
Practical: car park above the bay, a steep little path down to the sand. Early or late in the day it is quietest; there is a beach bar.
Practical: rental car, season and vehicle
Picking up at Larnaca: the rental desks are by the arrivals hall of Larnaca (LCA). Book online in advance and take full cover. Return at Larnaca and there is no one-way fee.
Driving on the left: Cyprus drives on the left, a legacy of British days. It takes a moment at roundabouts and when merging; take the first few kilometres gently. Signs are in Greek and English.
Best time: May, June, September and October are ideal: warm water and quiet roads. In spring the flamingos are still on the salt lake. July and August are hot and busy on the coast; drive the cape early or towards evening.
Vehicle: convertible and motorbike enjoy the cape most. A camper handles the roads fine; park at the edge by the bays. Cyprus has no tolls and no vignette.
Fuel: fill up before returning the car; there are stations around the airport and along the A3.

What we deliberately leave out
We leave out the mountainous interior and the ancient south-west: the Troodos, Kykkos Monastery, Paphos and Kourion are a day of their own and sit in the grand loop of Cyprus. Larnaca town itself, with the Finikoudes palm promenade and the church of Saint Lazarus, we also keep for a visit of its own; this corridor is deliberately the arrival drive to the east coast.
