The coast road instead of the AP-8
The fastest way from Bilbao Airport to San Sebastian is the AP-8: through the tunnels along the coast, in barely an hour, with tolls. Handy, but you mostly see crash barriers and concrete. This route takes the time and the coast: the spectacular island chapel of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, the famous surf bay and estuary of Mundaka, the fishing harbours of Lekeitio and Getaria and the long beach of Zarautz, before you arrive in San Sebastian.
It is a fly-drive route par excellence: you land at Bilbao, pick up your rental car and drive on to your stay in San Sebastian. We write out both directions separately, because the arrival day drives differently from the trip back to your flight. For anyone landing at Bilbao with a rental car who does not want to jump straight onto the motorway to San Sebastian. For anyone who wants to stretch the arrival day of a Basque holiday into a real coastal drive, and for everyone who would rather see cliffs, fishing harbours and txakoli vineyards than tunnels. The coast roads are a joy in a convertible or on a motorbike, and just as good in an ordinary rental car.
From Bilbao Airport to San Sebastian
Pick up your car at Bilbao Airport and head straight for the coast. First highlight is San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, the island chapel on a rock, reached by a stone staircase of 241 steps (famous as Dragonstone in Game of Thrones). On along the surf bay and estuary of Mundaka to picturesque Lekeitio with its harbour and tidal beach. In the afternoon Getaria, the fishing village on a headland with its txakoli vineyards, and the broad beach of Zarautz, before you drive into San Sebastian for the pintxos.
An honest tip for your arrival day: with a morning flight you can take all five stops at ease; if you land later, choose Gaztelugatxe and Getaria and save the rest for a day trip. Book a free time slot for Gaztelugatxe in high season. Your stay in San Sebastian is about half an hour from Getaria.
From San Sebastian to Bilbao Airport
The other way, on the day of your flight, time matters. Leave San Sebastian with a good margin and drive the coast in reverse: Zarautz and Getaria in the morning light, then Lekeitio and Mundaka. If you want to be sure of catching your flight, skip the last stops and take the fast road to Bilbao Airport from Gernika.
Mind the rental car return time and your provider's fuel rule (usually return it full). So fill up just before the airport; there are petrol stations around Loiu and on the road from Bilbao.
The fastest route or the most beautiful route
The AP-8 gets you from Bilbao Airport to San Sebastian in barely an hour, with tolls. Handy if you are in a hurry or land late, but you mostly see tunnels. This route deliberately chooses the coast: longer, but with cliffs, harbours and beaches. Count on a full day rather than a quick hop. To shorten it, rejoin the fast road at Gernika, Deba or Zarautz.

1. San Juan de Gaztelugatxe
San Juan de Gaztelugatxe is the emblem of the Basque coast: a small chapel on a rocky islet, linked to the mainland by a winding stone bridge and a staircase of 241 steps. The view over the cliffs and the Bay of Biscay is spectacular. Made famous as Dragonstone in Game of Thrones, so busy in high season.
Practical: park at the roadside visitor point, then a steep walk down and the steps up and back (allow 1.5 to 2 hours). In summer a free time slot is required, book ahead.
2. Mundaka
Mundaka sits at the mouth of the Urdaibai estuary, a UNESCO biosphere reserve of marshes and tidal channels. The village is world famous for its left-hand wave, one of the longest in Europe, so there are often surfers on the water. A quiet harbour, a fine church above the surf and wide views over the river mouth.
Practical: park by the harbour and walk to the viewpoint by the church. Low and high tide change the estuary completely.
3. Lekeitio
Lekeitio is one of the loveliest fishing towns on the coast: a lively harbour with painted boats, a Gothic basílica and two beaches. At low tide you can walk across a sandbar to the little island of San Nicolas. A good place for a lunch of fresh fish by the harbour.
Practical: paid parking at the edge, the centre and harbour are within walking distance. Check the tides if you want to walk to the island.
4. Getaria
Getaria lies on a headland the locals call the Mouse. It is the birthplace of the explorer Elcano and of the designer Balenciaga, and the heart of txakoli, the lightly sparkling Basque white wine. The fish restaurants grill the catch outside over charcoal, and the smell drifts through the lanes.
Practical: park at the edge and walk into the harbour town. The vineyards on the hills behind give lovely glimpses down to the sea.
5. Zarautz
Zarautz has the longest town beach in the Basque Country, a wide promenade and a reputation as a surf spot. From here it is about half an hour along the coast road over the Talaia to San Sebastian, with fine viewpoints over the bays on the way. A good place to stretch your legs before the last leg.
Practical: car park under the promenade. The old coast road to San Sebastian (not the motorway) gives the best sea views.
Practical: rental car, season and vehicle
Picking up your rental car at Bilbao: the rental desks are by the arrivals hall of Bilbao Airport (BIO). Book online in advance, almost always cheaper than at the desk. For this route you usually return the car to Bilbao (round trip), so no drop-off fee; if you want to return it further along, check the one-way rules.
Gaztelugatxe: in high season a free time slot is required, book online in advance. The climb is steep (241 steps), wear good shoes and take water. In rough weather the path can be closed.
Best time to travel: May, June, September and early October are ideal. The Basque Country is green because it rains regularly, even in summer; bring a rain jacket. July and August are busy on the coast.
Vehicle: the coast roads are a joy in a convertible or on a motorbike. Just as good in an ordinary rental car; with a camper mind the narrow, steep village centres and park at the edge.
Fuel: fill up before you return the car (returning it full is the rule with most providers). There are petrol stations around Bilbao Airport and on the road from the city.
