The beautiful road through the Pyrenees
The fastest way from Barcelona Airport to Andorra runs via the C-16 and the Cadí tunnel: about three hours. This route takes the finer side through the Catalan interior and the Pyrenees. First the serrated mountain and monastery of Montserrat, then the mighty castle of Cardona with its underground salt mountain, medieval Solsona and the cathedral town of La Seu d'Urgell at the foot of the mountains, before you cross the border into Andorra.
Note: Andorra is a separate country. If you drive a rental car, check in advance that your insurance covers Andorra (ask for a green card if needed), bring your passport or ID, and allow for a customs check when returning to Spain (Andorra is duty-free, with allowances on tobacco and alcohol). From Barcelona Airport to Andorra
Pick up your car at Barcelona Airport and head inland to Montserrat, the serrated mountain with its famous Benedictine monastery and Black Madonna, high above the plain. On to Cardona, with its mighty hilltop castle and the underground salt mountain (Muntanya de Sal) beside it. Then medieval Solsona with its cathedral and old streets, and the cathedral town of La Seu d'Urgell at the foot of the mountains. Then cross the border and climb through the Gran Valira valley to Andorra la Vella.
An honest tip: this is a long day with a border crossing. Arrange in advance that your rental car may enter Andorra and is insured, and bring your ID. After a late landing you are better off staying overnight in La Seu d'Urgell and crossing the border the next day.
From Andorra to Barcelona Airport
The other way, on the day of your flight, time matters, especially with the border. Leave Andorra with a good margin, because returning to Spain there may be a customs check (Andorra is duty-free, so keep to the allowances for tobacco and alcohol). Drive back via La Seu d'Urgell and take the fast road to Barcelona Airport at Solsona or Manresa if your margin gets tight.
Mind the rental car return time and your provider's fuel rule (usually return it full). Fuel is cheaper in Andorra, so fill up there before you cross back.
The fastest route or the most beautiful route
The fastest way via the C-16 and the tolled Cadí tunnel gets you from Barcelona Airport to Andorra in about three hours. Handy if you are in a hurry or land late. This route deliberately chooses the interior and the Pyrenees: longer, but with Montserrat, castles and medieval towns. To shorten it, take the fast road at Manresa or Solsona.
The 4 stops along the route
1. Montserrat
Montserrat is the striking serrated mountain above the Catalan plain, with a large Benedictine monastery high against the rocks, home to the Black Madonna (La Moreneta). The rock formations and the views are spectacular; a cable car and rack railway bring you up if you do not drive the mountain road yourself.
Practical: park by the monastery (paid, often full in high season); come early. Allow a few hours if you want to walk or visit the monastery.
2. Cardona
Cardona is dominated by a mighty medieval castle on a hill, now partly a parador. Beside it lies the Muntanya de Sal, a real mountain of rock salt you can visit underground. The medieval town at its foot is worth a stroll.
Practical: park by the castle for the view; the salt mine is visited on a guided tour. Combine both for a good midway stop.
3. Solsona
Solsona is a small but richly preserved medieval town with a cathedral, old mansions and narrow streets with characteristic gateways. It is also known for its giants and its carnival folklore. A quiet, authentic stop between Cardona and the mountains.
Practical: park at the edge and walk into the historic centre. Quiet outside the festivals; a good place for lunch.
4. La Seu d'Urgell
La Seu d'Urgell lies at the foot of the Pyrenees, just before the Andorran border. The Romanesque cathedral of Santa Maria is the only fully preserved medieval cathedral in Catalonia. At the 1992 Olympic canoe park you can watch the whitewater. The last stop before you cross the border.
Practical: park in the centre and see the cathedral. Fill up here or just over the border in Andorra, where fuel is cheaper.
Practical: rental car, border and season
Rental car and Andorra: not every provider allows you to take the rental car into Andorra, and insurance does not always cover it automatically. Arrange this in advance: ask for permission and a green card if needed, so you are covered. Bring your passport or ID.
The border: Andorra is not an EU member and not part of the EU customs union. Returning to Spain there may be a customs check; Andorra is duty-free, but allowances apply for tobacco, alcohol and electronics, among others. Expect some waiting at the border in high season.
Best time to travel: May to October for the mountain roads and hiking; in winter for the snow sports, but then snow tyres or chains may be required on the high sections. Check road conditions.
Fuel: fuel is noticeably cheaper in Andorra than in Spain; fill up there before you cross back. Returning it full remains the rule with most providers.

What we deliberately leave out
We leave out Barcelona itself: that is a city break in its own right. The high passes of the Pyrenees (Coll de la Botella, or the roads to Vallnord and Grandvalira) lie in Andorra itself and are beautiful, but belong to a tour on the spot, not the arrival drive. And the coast with the Costa Brava we save for a separate route from Barcelona Airport.
