The finest waterside spots of the Netherlands
Water shapes the Netherlands like no other country, and driving along it makes any tour more beautiful. From the great lakes and the Delta Works to a lighthouse or a steam pumping station, these are the 10 waterside spots that passed our own vetting, spread across the country. At each one you plan a drive there in one click, or let the planner build a round trip along the water from your own doorstep.
What we deliberately leave out, and why
The Netherlands is water through and through; we add only the spots truly worth a stop and reachable by car. A few examples of what we do not (yet) add:
- Ordinary canals and channels: water without a special view or monument is not a destination; it is about the spot, not every ditch.
- Marinas without a public view: lovely for boat owners, but without an open view or a place to stop, not usable as a driving stop.
- Beaches that are hard to reach in high season: with paid parking and queues on fine days; we weigh those by season.
If a spot is in our list, it is worth the detour.
Plan a round trip along the water from your own start
Type your start town and we build a round trip of about two hours with waterside spots from our selection as stops. Then adjust everything: duration, number of stops, vehicle.
10 waterside spots approved as a stop. A place name is enough; no need to share your location.

Lakes, the Delta Works or a lighthouse
Whether you drive along the great lakes, follow the dykes of the Delta Works or catch a lighthouse along the way, water is the common thread. The peat lakes of the low west, the lakes of Friesland, the sea arms of Zeeland and the Meuse lakes in the south: together they tell the story of a country that lives with the water. We line up the finest per province.
Frequently asked questions
Can I plan a route along the water from my own address?
Yes. Type your start town above and we build a round trip with waterside spots as stops; or click "plan a route here" at a spot and fill in your start.
Which spots can you visit and which are a photo stop?
That is shown per spot in the list. A visit stop has, for example, a museum or visitor centre; a photo stop you admire from the road or the dyke.
Why aren't all the waters of the Netherlands included?
Deliberately not. The country is all water; we pick the finest and most accessible spots per province, not a complete list. What does not clear the bar, we leave out.
Are these waterside drives free?
Yes. Viewing, generating from your own start, downloading the GPX and roadbook and sharing are free, with a small Touren.app mark.
