Why the Middle Rhine and Lahn are such good touring country
This is classic Rhine Romanticism: between Bingen and Koblenz the Rhine cuts through a narrow valley of steep vineyards, dozens of castles and the legendary Loreley, a World Heritage Site since 2002. Along the banks, quiet roads run past half-timbered towns and ferries. Right beside it the Lahn flows into the Rhine at Lahnstein; the Lahn valley is a world of its own, full of castles from Limburg to Wetzlar. It all lies close: from the border you reach the heart of the region in two to two and a half hours. Convertible, motorbike or camper: these riverside and valley roads are a joy to drive in all three.

Which Middle Rhine or Lahn route suits me?
For classic Rhine Romanticism with the Loreley and the castles, choose the Middle Rhine loop. For wine, Rüdesheim and the sunny right bank, take the Rheingau loop. For castles, cathedrals and half-timbering along a quieter river, the Lahn valley loop is your route. They join up at Lahnstein.
How far is the region from the Netherlands and Belgium?
Very doable. From the border you reach Koblenz, the heart of the Middle Rhine, in about two to two and a half hours, and the Lahn lies right beside it. A fine destination for a long weekend or as a stopover.
Are the routes toll-free?
Yes. All three routes run on ordinary federal and country roads, toll-free and without a vignette. Germany has no vignette requirement for cars.
When is the best time to drive?
From late spring into autumn; the vineyards colour beautifully in September and October. Some Rhine ferries run only in season.
